FLU / RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTION – INSTRUCTIONS

  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
  • Rest as much as possible. Get adequate sleep. Give your body time to recover.
  • Drink plenty of liquids. Any non-alcoholic drink is fine. Do not force solid food if your appetite is off.
  • Use Over-the-counter medicines for relief of symptoms. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen, or naproxen are effective for body aches and fever. Decongestants (nasal spray or by mouth) can relieve excessive nasal drainage. Cough medicines containing dextromethorphan (DM) are helpful for cough.
  • Fever over 103°, diarrhea vomiting is suggestive of FLU.
  • Majority of infections are viral and don’t respond to antibiotics.
  • Remember to get FLU VACCINE early in season to minimize the risk of flu.
  • If your symptoms or overall condition worsen significantly, seek medical care at once without delay.
